Getting your home office organized, especially if you work from home, can seem like an impossible task. As the primary paper center of your home, your home office tends to have more piles of "stuff" that you need to do something with than any other room in the home. How do you organize those piles? How do you organize any part of your home office? What needs to be organized? And where do you even start?
Start with your files. Because the home office is the primary paper center of your home, getting your files organized first will have the most dramatic impact on how the space looks and also about how you feel about the space. Home office organization, like all organization projects, is more about how you feel about the space than about how the space really looks. So start by getting those files in order.
How do you get your filing organized? Organize it by how you use it. How you look for something is different than how I look for something. So how my filing system looks will be different than how your filing system looks. Your files and how you organize them need to make sense for you.
But before you actually file anything, take some time to think about and write out a filing structure. Writing it down will help you think through it and make sure that it is the best solution for you. It is also helpful to keep this filing structure information as a reference tool. That way if you have a question later about where something is or how to file a new piece of paper, your filing structure document will help you figure out what to do.
But perhaps the most important home office organization tip of all is to make sure that you keep up with the paper that comes into your home office. It is great to get a system setup but if you do not maintain it on at least a weekly basis, the paper clutter beast will come and take over your home office again. So make sure to schedule home office organization time into your week.
